I have suffered from Hashimoto's for more than 20 years now. Instead of getting better, my health has continued to worsen.

In the last year, my thyroid dose was cut from 150 to 90 and I gained more than 40 lbs, got so weak I couldn't walk, and thought I was going to die.

I finally found a doctor out of state, who knew what to look for. I have pituitary disease. The local doctors threw me out of their offices or told me that I was lying and my real problem was that I was mentally ill. My psych. nurse practitioner knew that something was wrong with my endo. system---but not the endos or the internal medicine doctors.

I learned that I was wasting my time talking to the local doctors. They never bothered to do an MRI despite my problems with balance, vision loss, gaining weight despite not eating, and fluctuating electrolyte balances and thyroid levels.

Don't waste your time with your local doctors, if you are really sick and they can't figure things out. Go to a teaching hospital where they may be capable of helping you. I wasted three years trying to deal with local doctors. After finding out I had a pituitary tumor one of the local doctors told me that I was lying---despite having the report from the out of state doctor in her hand. That's how screwed up that doctor was. When I asked to be tested for hypopit. she laughed and told me that I was "fat, lazy and depressed" and that I wasn't really sick.

The local neurologist was just as skeptical (I think there was some talk among the doctors at that point) until she ordered my films and could see the tumor for herself.

Advocate for yourself---the doctors are not that smart or helpful.

I've said that myself after being run around from doc to doc and specialty to specialty......next time I need to see someone Im checking myself into the Mayo Clinic for a 5-day workup until they figure me out the right way.

I know some people who swear by it and go once a year for a full deal, head to toe eval from the Mayo Clinic.....they are supposedly one of the best...might be worth the trip.

Aunt Body - I have been suffering for years now and wonder what symptoms you had. Mine are so numerous I thought I was cracking up. All were attributed to "early menopause." Now they say Hashi's but I'm still not convinced they know the whole story. Thanks.
